For many years Sandy has enjoyed Christmas illuminations in the town centre. In 2012 the Town Council took over the responsibility for the illuminations and entered into a three year agreement with an independent contractor for Christmas lights which has now been extended. The lights are funded by the Town Council.
In 2013 we set up the Friends of Sandy Christmas Lights. This group of local volunteers plans and organises the annual lights and a community event to mark the switch on. The funding raised by the Friends of Sandy Christmas Lights and any donations or sponsorship which the group is able to secure is used to fund the Christmas tree, future lights and the lights events itself. The Group is made up of councillors and community volunteers and welcomes new members at any time, it meets throughout the year to raise money for the lights and to plan future activities. Please contact the Town Council on 01767 681491 if you would like to join and help.
The 2015 switch-on event was very successful with over 3,000 people attending and enjoying traditional Christmas food and drink, live entertainment provided by local schools and groups, a small funfair, santa's grotto and an array of delightful stalls selling gifts and crafts. The atmosphere was brilliant and the planning team hopes to maintain the momentum in years to come.
