The Town Council has recently been critcised in the press and other local media for its longstanding policy of not permitting solar lights, planters, toys and trinkets to be placed on graves within the cemetery. The Town Council understands that many relatives do wish to leave tributes of this sort on the graves of their loved ones but there are several reasons why this is not permitted and why the council only allows floral tributes on graves.
• Many relatives object to lights, toys and other items which they do not want to see in the cemetery and which have always been prohibited by our burial regulations
• The cemetery is mainly laid to lawn and the council cannot be maintained efficiently if individual graves are covered in objects, glass vases etc
• Items left on graves have been damaged and/or stolen, removed and placed elsewhere in the cemetery. The Town Council has no way to monitor or prevent such activities which are also distressing to relatives.
The Town Council has issued a full statement on this matter which can be viewed here.
