Get composting this autumn
Date Added: 05/10/2015
Residents can help their garden to grow and reduce their waste by taking advantage of some great offers to get composting.
The weather is still mild at the moment and gardens blooming but it’s almost time to prune, trim and prepare your gardens for next year.
Rather than getting rid of your waste, why not try composting? It couldn’t be easier, either: just throw your garden waste into a compost bin making sure you leave out any perennial weeds, and over the winter months it will rot down to produce environmentally friendly compost that when added to the garden will improve soil structure, maintain moisture during the dry months, supress plant disease and keep weeds at bay.
Anyone wanting to try home composting can buy home compost bins from Central Bedfordshire Council at a subsidised price of only £13 for a 220-litre bin or £15 for a 330-litre bin.
Councillor Budge Wells, Deputy Executive Member for Community Services at Central Bedfordshire Council said: “We know that a lot of residents already compost waste at their homes and we would like to encourage those that don’t to give it a go.
“Composting is a great way to recycle garden and even kitchen waste items like uncooked fruit and vegetable peelings as it reduces the amount of waste sent to landfill. So, this autumn why not go green and reduce waste by home composting?”
