Sandy Mayor Cllrs Mrs Susan Sutton laid a memorial wreath in memory of all war dead and injured and in thankksgiving for the work of out service men and women across the word at a ceremony in Sandy on 10 November 2013. Cllr Sutton was accompanied by the Mayor of Skarszewy, Mr Dariusz Skalski, who was leading a party of visitors from Poland to Sandy. There have been links and two-way cultural exchanges between Sandy and the community in Skarszewy since 1995. Both Mayors were also present at a ceremony in St Neots cemetery later the same day when there was an opportunity to commemorate the Polish war dead and to visit the graves of some Polish war veterans in St Neots. Both communities were united in these solemn acts of remembrance.
Sandy's Polish visitors will return to Skarszewy on Monday 11th November having enjoyed a packed programme of local visits as well as experience of the changeable character of the British weather. On Friday 8th November a community garden in Bedford Road Recreation was renamed the Sandy-Skarszewy Community Garden in celebration of the link of friendship between the communities and a commemorative stone was set in place to mark the event in the midst of a very heavy downpour.
